Commuter Challenge Week is a friendly competition between Canadian cities and workplaces. It encourages people to leave their cars at home and take alternate transportation (ride, walk, take transit, carpool, swim, skateboard, etc.) for a day or the full workweek.
As MEC, we embrace the event with our whole hearts. Our CO2 emissions go down, our playful side comes out, and the circus factor goes up. Way, way up. To celebrate our stellar commuters, we’re having a barbecue in the empty parking lot at our office, setting up a Velcro wall, and slacklining through the lunch room. Stop by if you’re in the neighbourhood, just don’t try to park a single-occupancy vehicle in our parking lot.
We offer you the following rhyming photo essay to put you in the mood for an out-of-the-ordinary commute.
Decisions, decisions, we’re fretting you know.
How should we? How could we? How will we go?
What if we try to SUP for the week?
And brave the winds from Kits to False Creek.
We could get up early to climb up the Chief.
Then cycle to town for eggs and corn beef.
You could dress up before you head out the door.
You’d have a chance to wear that wig once more.
And I could stick on the killer ‘stache.
(It tickles my nose, but makes people laugh.)
We’re so excited! We’re smiling like kids.
But how ever we ride, we do wear our lids.
It’s a worthy challenge, this thing we’re espousing.
And it could be the week you try bicycle jousting.
The week is approaching. It’s time for the show.
But how should we? How could we? How will we go?
Commuter challenge week runs from June 3–9. You can register here.
