Community Contributions by the Numbers

We invest 1% of our annual revenue in grassroots conservation and outdoor recreation, meaning we try to do as much as we can to make sure wild spaces continue to exist and people continue to be inspired by the outdoors. To give you an idea of what this looks like, here are some highlights of the initiatives and projects we contributed to in 2012:

Over 100,000: Big Wild Actions

Over 13,000: signatures added to Dare to Be Deep, a CPAWS campaign to support advancing marine conservation in Canada

Over 1,000: people participated in the MEC/Parks Canada Learn to Camp program\

233: kilometers of trail restored, which is equal to the length of the Madawaska River in southern Ontario or the Icefields Parkway

112: hectares of land bought by land acquisition groups with help from MEC funding

65: adventurers on 26 expeditions supported by MEC

39: youth participated in the Get Outside BC summit, and reached out to 100+ youth by hosting their own community events

13: cycling related projects received funding

5: new access points were gained for hiking, climbing and mountain biking areas

2: successful nominations to the Conservation Alliance to the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition and West Coast Environmental Law (total granting amount of $65,000

1: kayak donated for an Access & Activity grant

0: outhouse applications received in 2012 (between 1989 and 2011, MEC has helped fund the construction of 13 outhouses)
